Mercury Over Maps #24. The evening features three sets: a trio between Douglas Benford, Tilly Coulton and Hardi Kurda; a duo between Viv Corringham and Lawrence Casserley; and a duo between Phil Durrant and Bill Thompson. Phil Durrant – modular feedback. Born near London in 1957, Phil Durrant is a multi-instrumentalist improviser, composer and sound artist who performs solo and in groups. As a violinist, including in the Butcher Russell Durrant trio, he was a key exponent of the group voice approach to improvised music. In the late 1990s his trio with Radu Malfatti and Thomas Lehn marked a shift towards a more reductionist approach. In recent years, as an acoustic and electric mandolinist, he has performed duos with guitarists Daniel Thompson, Martin Vishnick and Pascal Marzan, and with saxophonist Christoph Gallio. He performs regularly in a trio with Mark Wastell and John Butcher and has ongoing projects with drummer Emil Karlsen. Bill Thompson – Moog guitar and electronics. Bill Thompson is a sound artist and composer who performs solo and in groups including The Seen, zerøspace and Airfield (with Ian Spink), and in duos with Ian Stonehouse, Phil Durrant and Yoni Silver. Originally trained as a guitarist, he has worked extensively with live electronics and in recent years returned to guitar using a Moog-built instrument combined with electronics and found objects. He has received numerous awards and commissions including the PRS for New Music ATOM award and the Aberdeen Visual Arts Award. Hardi Kurda – violin and electronics. Tilly Coulton – flute. Douglas Benford – tenor recorder, objects and electronics. Viv Corringham – voice and electronics. Lawrence Casserley – signal processing.
